The RNG of Life

It wasn’t the sports model that his older brother had gotten when he left for college, but he liked the sensible car that he had received. It certainly fit everything he needed as he drove toward the university he would be attending. Now if only he could get his mother off the phone.
“No, mother, I am not lost.” He huffed as the cellphone was practically glued to his ear. “I know where I am going. I have been to this campus before for the tour, remember?” He sighed and shifted the phone to where it was at his other ear so that he could switch the hand that was on the wheel. “No, I’m positive I won’t change my mind and go to the university Thor goes to.”
His older brother was the star quarterback of their high school’s football team. He had the muscles, the smile, and the charming personality that had all the girls chasing after him, leaving his younger brother alone with his studies. Not a day went by when the question, “Are you really his brother?” was asked. Loki had endured it for as long as they attended the same schools growing up, but he vowed that it wasn’t going to be that way once they graduated high school. He was tired of living in his older brother’s shadow and going to a completely different university would guarantee that he wouldn’t.
“In fact, I’m turning into it as we speak.” He informed. “Yes, I am telling the truth. There are trees, buildings, other attending students, and plenty of signs telling me that I’m in the right place.” He rolled his eyes. “Fine, I will send pictures to prove it, but I have to get off the phone to do so… I love you, too mother… and father as well. Goodbye.”
He sighed with relief when he finally hung up the phone and found a parking spot near the building he would be rooming in. As soon as he got out, he took a few pictures to send to his mother. Once that was over, he went to the back of his car and pulled out some of his things, mostly his book bag and the bag that held most of his clothes. He would have to come back for the boxes and the bookshelf that he would have to assemble once he got everything settled.
Building A, Suite number twenty-five, it was on the second floor and he didn’t have to use his key because the door was wide open, being held there by a box of canned beer. He hesitated, making sure that his keys did in fact say Building A and the proper room number. Slowly, he took a step through the doorframe, looking around. He spotted no one, so he stepped further in, deduced that the rooms on the left were the ones taken so he went to the right, taking the first room that looked completely empty. He placed his bags on the single bed, turning around to get the rest of his thing until he jumped out of his skin.
“Did you really think you’d be able to sneak in and not have to introduce yourself?” One of two fellow freshman that stood in his doorway. He was shorter than the other, sporting dark brown hair, brown eyes, as well as a KISS shirt and blue jeans. “Well? Are you gonna say something, new guy?”
The other, a blond hair man with blue eyes, and had muscle that came close to reminding Loki of his brother, nudged his friend when his elbow. “We should probably introduce ourselves, first.” He took a step into the room and extended his hand. “I’m Steve Rodgers, I’ll be the ROTC unit at the university.”
“… Loki Odinson.” He replied, shaking the man’s hand. “Literature.”
“Anthony Stark.” His other roommate added. “Call me Tony. I’m in for Physics and Technology Engineering.”
“So is this all you brought with you?” Steve asked.
“No, there’s a few things still in my car.” He answered.
“Then come on, we’ll help you bring in the rest of your stuff.” Steve offered, and he led the way out the room, pausing when Tony did not follow after them. “Tony?”
“You go do that, I have to get our place hooked up.” He explained. “In case you haven’t noticed, the school’s internet sucks to the high heavens.”
Steve shook his head and followed Loki to his car. “So, Tony is from Manhattan and I’m from Brooklyn, what about you?”
It took him a moment to realize that he was actually talking to him. It felt very strange to have been noticed by someone else that wasn’t family. He wasn’t really expecting his roommates to be friendly, let alone being interested in him in some form.
“… Maine.” He answered.
“Wow, long way from home aren’t you?”
They were in Connecticut, and yes, he was the furthest away, but he doubted that was something to brag about. The university they were attending held several other students from around the world. He said nothing in response as they reached his car. The first thing Steve grabbed was the box containing the pieces to the bookshelf.
“I can help you put this together if you want?” He said as Loki assembled a few of the smaller boxes. They made their way back to the dorm. “Any siblings? I’m an only child, myself.”
“I have… an older brother.” Loki answered.
“Is he going to this school too?”
He scoffed. “No, this school is much too quiet for his tastes.”
“Not gonna lie, with Tony here, that might change.” Steven laughed. They made it back to their room, finding Tony with a few laptops around him, one of which Loki recognized as one of his own.
“Password-one-two-three is not a secure password, new guy.” Tony remarked. “And nether is ‘United States’ with i, e, and a as numbers, Steve.”
“Tony!” Steve groaned.
“What? I got our Wi-Fi up? You guys want to be on it, right?” He retorted, not looking up from the devices. “And with the way he orders books left and right, he’s gonna definitely need it.” The two were still not impressed. Tony only shrugged, closed Loki’s laptop and handed it back to him. “… You didn’t get out much did you, buddy?”
Loki merely gave him a blank stare and accepted his property back. “There wasn’t much worthy of attending to deem going out for.”
He walked back to his room to, hopefully, to get settled into his room, not expecting the company that followed after him.
“Wait-wait-wait-wait.” Tony said as he followed his roommate. “You haven’t done anything in high school?”
“Much like what I intend to do for my college career.” He began. “I had my classes to focus on. Anything else was either boring or useless.”
“So... you didn’t do anything outside of studying?” He asked.
Loki shook his head no.
“You didn’t go out on Friday night?”
Again, he shook his head.
“Not even Saturdays?”
He continued to answer with a shake of his head.
“You didn’t go to anything like dances? Parties? Or rallies?” His eyes seemed to grow wider with every shake of Loki’s head. “Did you even go to Prom?”
“For what reason would I have to spend a lot of money to watch the same kids I watch every day become even more than the idiots that they are for one night?” On top of that, he couldn’t ask any of the girls in his grade to go with him because they would either one, ditch him the moment they spotted their real friends, two, use him to get to his brother, or three and the most likely out the bunch, play a horrible prank on him before the night was over, which had happened once before. It had been a fundraiser dance, attempting to save the art programs for the school, and a girl had asked him to go with her. He accepted under the belief that he might gain a companion of some sort after years of being the one student in the back that had no one to talk to. Once he got to the dance, he had been thoroughly humiliated by his fellow classmates. What started off with large splash from the punch bowl ended with him abandoning his jacket in the toilet because some of the football players, his brother nowhere to be found, thought it would be funny to flush it down with it still on him. He then had to leave his shoes because some sort of glue held them onto a wall. Not seeing any more point in staying there, he simply marched out the school and wound up at the public library until his family found him. He couldn’t trust any of the other students after that, and he vowed to never try anything like that ever again. Since Prom was the biggest dance to any high school’s legacy, he thought that it was best for him, and his clothes, to simply ignore it entirely.
“So that means you’ve never dated? No girlfriend or anything?”
“No.” He couldn’t trust any of the girls in his school to actually, and truly, want to date him.
“Did you even have any friends?”
“In my experience, anyone who tried to be friends always had an ulterior motive that ended unfavorably for me.” Loki explained. “It was better to simply not have them.”
“Dear… lord…” Tony gasped. “Real Life RNG was just not good for you was it?”
The comment had garnered a confused look, but he figured that it meant that he took pity on what a miserable time he had in high school. “No, it wasn’t.”
“We’re gonna have to fix that…”
I AM FINALLY BACK FROM TWO WEEKS OF NOTHING!! :faint:
Dear lord... seemed like i had no time to do anything these past couple of days... you can chalk most of it up for me actually getting a job, an actual adult job. Right now its still labeled under "temporary" work, but i'm hoping that changes and its better than nothing i suppose... anyways, i spent most of this past week trying to get my training done. Still got a little bit more to do, but for the most part, the initial training is over...
On top of that, i have had no drive to really write anything... figured that starting the College AU writing prompt (status can be found here: katninjagirl96.deviantart.com/… ) involving Loki, Tony, Steve and anyone else i deem worthy of an appearance going through a college experience. I really tried to write something else, but so far this has been the only thing that i had motivation to write honestly... So i might just focus on this, or just sprinkle it through other things when the time comes... we'll have to see, but i can say that i might have something else up considering i see something from Wolfheart343 that looks promising...

So yeah, please enjoy freshman year Loki, Tony and Steve from the MARVEL Universe! :D

All Characters used belong to MARVEL
I will have some OC's make an appearance but they didn't show up in this one.
And the Prompt i got from Tumblr.

And yeah, any comments questions or concerns would be greatly appreciated! :D

Congratulations on your job! :D

I accidentally read chapter 1 first but oh well. Is Loki adopted in this one? Does he know? Are the answers to these questions spoilers?

..what is RNG?

Don't worry Loki! You're not alone, I've never dated and have never gone to parties... but hopefully you can learn to have trust and friends :D
